Project Description
Surveys have shown the activity most people want to take part in is swimming – and they have made a wise choice because swimming is so good for you. So just what is it that makes swimming such an excellent way to get and stay active? Here are a few reasons to take the plunge:
• The water takes your weight, so swimming can be great for those who want low impact exercise – women during pregnancy for example, or for people who have mobility problems or want to protect their joints.
• Swimming works your whole body for all over toning!
• Swimming is great for your heart. Because you are using your whole body your heart has to pump blood hard to your arms and legs, helping circulation too.
• It is also great for your lungs as you will find yourself breathing in a deep and rhythmic way which gives your lungs a boost.
What to bring
All you need is your swimming costume and a towel of course!
If you don’t want to get your hair wet then you might also want to wear a swimming cap, which you can buy in all good sports shops and at most swimming pools. And if you’ll be putting your face in the water it’s a good idea to buy some goggles.
How much will I exert myself?
It’s completely up to you. You can push your self as much or little as you like, and you can give it a go on your own or with a team.
Safety
The usual water safety rules apply – walk, don’t run on the poolside, be aware of others, don’t dive in the shallow end.
